After a successful weekend at Zandvoort with three victories, it was now Monza, Italy’s turn to conclude the weekend successfully.
The first qualifying session was for the Jaguar XJR-11 Group C, a first for David and Olivier Hart with this car. The first part went well, with a fifth-fastest time overall. However, at the end of the session, David lost control of the car, damaging it so badly that it was unable to continue the weekend.
With the Bizzarrini, which was allowed to run on “home ground,” things went very well. David started from pole position and managed to hold off Cottingham in the Cobra on the first lap. The Bizzarrini’s brakes weren’t working optimally, so David had to settle for third place in the race, which was fine until he spun on the copious amounts of oil from the car in front of him and ended up in the gravel trap, from which he couldn’t escape.
Olivier, who was invited to drive a Cobra with Urs Beck, crossed the finish line first, but due to a time penalty, he was classified 5th with the fastest lap of the field.
DHG Racing’s entire focus was now on the Lola race. David once again started from pole, but the competition was fierce. A fierce battle developed with Roddaro’s Porsche 917, which was much faster on the straights and was able to gain an advantage there.
After David’s pit stop, handing over the wheel to Nicky in 2nd place, it was up to him to beat the Porsche. It was also difficult for Nicky, but ultimately, the two men managed to cross the finish line with a comfortable lead and once again set the fastest lap.
