One of the highlights for the DHG Team remains the Historic Grand Prix race on home soil, and yet sometimes things don’t go as planned!
Olivier was the first to take the lead during practice with the Ford Mustang. The wet track made for some great driving, putting Olivier comfortably in first place at the start of the session, even ahead of Steve Soper. The drying track made everyone faster except Olivier, who pitted with a broken gearbox and ultimately had to start the race from 30th.
Qualifying for the Cobras went better; David and Olivier finished in 7th place. Unfortunately, Hugenholtz and Coronel experienced problems immediately upon leaving the pits, forcing them to start from the back of the grid.
Fortunately, the Lola T703B performed better than the rest. David set a great time and secured 4th place for the race.
During Saturday’s race, Olivier had a tough job starting from 30th, but he managed to pull ahead. His lap times were expected to land him somewhere in the top four, which unfortunately didn’t happen due to a broken engine. End of story for the youngster.
The Gentlemen’s Drivers Race on Sunday morning provided some fantastic scenery, especially as the race starts at 8:00 AM. David had a lightning-fast start and was immediately among the top three. Hans Hugenholtz, in the second Cobra, overtook many competitors and built up a strong position. Due to a safety car situation, David pitted too early and had to continue his race, having dropped several positions. His fast, consistent lap times, which were on par with the top drivers, quickly put him in the front, but a misunderstanding with another driver resulted in a stop-and-go. Olivier, who had taken over the wheel by then, was forced to give way, which he didn’t, resulting in a black flag and the Cobra’s disqualification.
Tom Coronel, who had taken over from Hans, spectacularly drove the Cobra across the starting line in fifth place with the fastest lap time.
Last but not least, the Lola had to make up for everything this weekend. With an excellent start, David took P3 in this super-fast field. A daring braking maneuver landed him in the gravel, which later resulted in a broken track rod. End of story for the Lola.
