Olivier Hart delivered a fantastic performance during the two Historic Formula 1 races at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
In the support programme of the Mexican Grand Prix, and under the watchful eye of tens of thousands of motorsport fans, Olivier drove his Arrows A3 Cosworth to two hard-fought victories.
Earlier this season, Olivier had already driven the GPX-prepared Arrows at the familiar Spa-Francorchamps circuit, but the F1 track in the heart of Mexico City remained a mystery to him until qualifying. As a result, qualifying became a voyage of discovery and, partly due to the fact that Olivier saved his new tyres for the race, qualifying at the front was always going to be a significant challenge.
However, that is exactly what he managed to do. In the first session, the Arrows was the fastest, and only an improvement by the experienced Mike Cantillon prevented Olivier from starting from pole position.
In the first race, held on Saturday, Olivier got off to a good start, after which a battle ensued between Cantillon in his Williams FW07C and Jamie Constable in his Tyrrell 011B. The trio remained incredibly close until Olivier, from second place, turned a defensive move into an overtaking manoeuvre for the lead of the race.
He successfully pulled off this spectacular feat, after which Olivier was able to pull away from the rest of the field and record the first victory of the weekend.
In the second race, Olivier was allowed to start from pole position and drove a strong opening phase in which he built up a lead of almost two seconds. Behind him, however, Cantillon was charging through in the Williams and, after a heavy battle, the Williams driver took the lead around the outside of the fourth corner.
Olivier did not let up, however; he kept the pressure on, and after a small mistake while exiting the final corner of the circuit, the golden Arrows was able to pass once again. This broke Cantillon’s resistance, and in the final phase of the race, Olivier again pulled out a gap of two seconds, securing his second Formula 1 victory in as many days.
With that, Olivier concluded a fantastic weekend in front of packed grandstands—an experience that leaves him wanting more.
